Stara is a pioneer in Precision Agriculture in Brazil. Stara has always been developing technologies so the farmer can increase yield and be provided with savings. One of them is the Zero Crop Damage which performs automatic shut-off of the planting row units where the sprayer and spreader will further pass over  This exclusive Stara technology provides savings of up to 4% on seeds, regardless of the path width to be set and application width.

Requirements and functions

The Zero Crop Damage is available on any Stara planter with Row-by-Row Shut-Off System and Topper 5500. As a result, the farmer who already owns a Stara planter can update it. This process is performed by Topper 5500 software. In other words, without mechanical interference from the machine and without the need to install a new component on the planter, only updating the Topper 5500 version and carrying out a new calibration.

The Zero Crop Damage works as follows: the planter shuts off the seed row unit at the exact spot of the sprayer or spreader. You can import the straight AB lines from the self-propelled machine by means of a flash drive. Then, point A and point B are copied from another controller or create new lines on the planter Topper. It isn’t required to use application maps.

Remember that the lines to be created for Zero Crop Damage path shut-off must be straight AB lines. For the planting line, the technology works with straight AB lines or curves AB lines. That is, regardless of the seed placement spot.

Additionally, a boundary is mandatory in the area and must be done at least once. It allows the self-propelled machines to follow the paths created by the planter, which are easy to be identified by the operator who has to perform post-emergent applications.

For good Zero Crop Damage performance, good quality GNSS signal correction is mandatory (minimum variation of 4 cm), or even RTK correction signals to ensure path following precision. In addition, the tractor must be equipped with auto steering for equidistance between one pass and another.

Calibrations

To acquire the Zero Crop Damage, the technician has to update Topper 5500 version to release the controller and further equipment calibration to start the planting operations. The main machine calibrations refer to the dimensions to be measured due to the Row-by-Row Shut-Off System and the assembly passes to make sure the tractor auto steering is delivering acceptable equidistance between one pass and another.

The Zero Crop Damage settings are found in Menu > Field > Base boundary > Zero Crop Damage, on Topper 5500. The editable features are AB line for application (choose), self-propelled machine wheel tread width adjustment (meters), the self-propelled machine path width (it varies from 0.45 to 1.5 m), application range width of the self-propelled machine (meters), boundary limit (meters), or boundary passes (number of passes of the self-propelled machine).

Advantages of the Zero Crop Damage

One of the main advantages of the technology is the average savings of up 4% on seeds, depending upon the application width of the sprayer and spreader for solid products and wheelset path width. It may vary from crop to crop, terrain type and owner preference.

On average, 0.55 m is used for soybeans and 0.70 m for corn. In other words, the plant type interferes to prevent crop damage. Therefore, a Stara planter with the Row-by-Row Shut-Off System saves an average of 5.03% in seeds over boundary areas plus the Zero Crop Damage technology, you can have an economy of up to 4% may provide total savings of up to 9.03% in seeds.

To simulate the results of this technology in the crop, the farmer can download the Stara Planting app, available on Android and IOS. Through the app, you can simulate how much the Row-by-Row Shut-Off System and Zero Crop Damage can provide you with savings, according to your situation. Also, you can simulate the investment viability of the Zero Crop Damage

Additionally, the farmer can calculate the coefficient of variation. That is, evaluate the planting quality of each field in the same app.
